When taking a float down the "Ghost River Trail" in La-Grange, Tennessee the one plant that dominates the river banks is Virginia sweetspire. From this common native comes the cultivar "Henry"s Garnet" a deciduous shrub which typically grows 3-5 feet tall. Fragrant, tiny white flowering-plants borne in cylindrical, drooping racemes (3-6" long) cover the shrub with bloom in early summer. We also offer a dwraf variety "Little Henry". Oval, dark green leaves (1-4" long) turn an attractive garnet red in autumn, sometimes persisting on the shrub until December. flowering-plants (racemes larger) and fall color of this cultivar are superior to that of the species. Zone 5-9.
