Purple Beautyberry (Callicarpa dichotoma)
Callicarpa dichotoma native to China and Japan is a multiple stemmed shrub with the most unusual colored fruit. The fruit is smaller, more profuse and more violet/lavender than C. americana. Fruit ripening proceeds over a long time period, and fruit clusters will remain into the winter, after foliage has dropped.
These plants like average well drained soil, but does better with ample moisture. We will cut them very hard in spring, down to 8-12", which seems to enhance their density and fruit production.
