‘Heiligabend’, for my family in Germany the big Christmas Day.
We kids would spend most of the day in the kid’s room separated from the main apartment. The living room was draped off, so we could not spy going to the bathroom. My dad got the tree inside from the spot it was hanging outside from the bathroom window and started decorating. Meals for midday consisted of just broth and bread. Than at dusk, we would all bundle up and go for a walk in the neighborhood to heighten the excitement. Houses or yards where not decorated like in the US in those days, so we just get a glimpse into other folks windows. Than it was on, the ‘Bescherung’ (opening presents). My dad would ring the bell and we storm into the living room. Real candles on the tree, causing the occasional burning of a branch. After this a real big meal often duck, goose or rabbit. Still looking back kindly on this sweet tradition. The two Christmas days where reserved to visiting friend and family. Happy Holidays for all of you and may you have fun celebrating. |
