Southern Shield Fern (Thelypteris kunthii)
This handsome 2-3 ft tall fern is very easy to grow, spread rather quickly and forms pretty, lush masses. This fern is unlike other ferns and will grow just fine in some sun and light shade. It also can tolerate considerable drought.
While other ferns tend to form clumps, this one likes to spread by sending out shoots in all directions in loose and loamy soil even more so.
We have noticed that it will stay green and send out new fronds until that absolute first killing frost.
Most experts will give a hardiness range Middle to Lower South, we have grown it for the last ten years in lower West TN.
So we believe it is zone 7-11.
